How do you play a basketball game after a marathon? The West Monroe Rebels are about to find out.
Just days after winning a 99-95 decision ix six overtimes…that’s right six overtimes, at Airline High School in Bossier City, the Rebels travel to Alexandria on Friday to play Holy Savior Menard at the Rapides Parish Coliseum at 6 p.m.
“I have never experienced anything like that,” West Monroe coach Kyle Hill recalled of the win at Airline. “It was almost comical, like ‘this is never going to end’. At one point an official came over and said ‘Is this game ever going to end?’”
Both teams had opportunities to end the game, including Airline going to the free throw line with a chance to put the game away in regulation.
The free throws were no good and Langston Powell rebounded and converted on the other end to get the game to extra time.
West Monroe has reinforcements from football season on the floor now in Garrett Kahmann, Jerry Day, Dontrell Cobbs and Dalvin Hutchinson but the coaches have been pleased with the core nucleus so far this season.
“We had a strong core even before football got here,” Hill said. “We probably schedule a lot differently than most people because we expect the football team in the Dome every year and so we schedule time off this week (until the weekend), and spend time getting our guys on the same page. You go out and put it all together and see what kid of team your are going to be. We feel like we have gotten better the last two weeks, but we have to go out and show it in games.”
