West Monroe picked up a pair of big wins on the hardwood Friday.
The Lady Rebels got back on track with a 66-48 win over Pineville to improve to 1-1 in District 2-5A play while the Rebels beat Captain Shreve 67-58 in a final tune-up before district play begins next Tuesday at Ouachita.
West Monroe Lady Rebels stumbled out of the gate and fell behind Pineville 7-0 early before a 30-8 run gave them a 30-15 halftime advantage.
It was more of the same in the second half as West Monroe hit some big time three-point shots and Pineville struggled to put the ball in the basket despite a big advantage rebounding on the boards throughout the night.
“To be honest with you, we worked for two days on (rebounding),” West Monroe Lady Rebel coach John Green said. “We challenged them and I think for the most part we got better. We competed and our guards. We still have a ways to go but we got better.”
Faith Robinson led the way for West Monroe with 20 points while Layden Farrar scored 17 points and Lee Lee Kendall chipped in 14 points.
The Rebels led wire-to-wire against the Captain Shreve Gators. West Monroe led 29-22 at halftime and pushed things to double digits in the third quarter.
West Monroe saw the Gators storm back within seven in the fourth quarter before putting it away at the free throw line down the stretch.
Langston Powell scored 14 points to lead four Rebels in double figures.
Chris Tyler (12), Garrett Kahmann (10) and Landon Powell (10) also chipped in double digit scoring.
“It wasn’t polished, but give Captain Shreve credit,” West Monroe coach Kyle Hill said. “They are a scrappy team and much better than their record shows. We found ways to finish it off. We are starting to grow up and that is a good things this time of the year.”
