Holiday hoops action is returning to West Monroe High School on Wednesday, December 27 with the 2017 Sidney Smith Invitational. Girls and boys basketball will be played in two gyms on the WMHS campus Wednesday through Saturday this week.
The Lady Rebels and the girls field will tipoff in a round robin format on Wednesday, West Monroe hosts Mandeville at 11 a.m. in the new gym.
“This is one of the strongest field of girls teams we have ever had,” West Monroe coach John Green said. “We are excited.”
Ruston takes on Mansfield at 12:20 p.m.; Iota takes on Rayville at 1:40 p.m.; Ponchatoula battles Bossier at 3 p. m.; Captain Shreve takes on Lee (Baton Rouge) at 4:20 p.m.; Zachary takes on Southwood at 5:40 p.m. and Ouachita plays against McKinley in the nightcap Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The boys will play a regular eight-team tournament bracket. West Monroe will host Mansfield on Thursday at 6:20 p.m. Other Thursday first-round boys games include Ruston against Neville at 3:40 p.m.; Ouachita versus Green Oaks at 5 p.m., and Wossman taking on Rayville 7:40 p.m.
“One thing that is great in this is finding people you don’t normally play,” West Monroe coach Kyle Hill said. “It is nice to not play the same people over and over.”
Hill touted the chance to see West Monroe potentially play some of the top teams in the local area such as Wossman (3A finals), Rayville, Neville, Ruston and Ouachita (5A quarterfinals) as well as the chance to have large crowds due to close driving distance for some of the other competing schools.
“We decided to go with an eight-team bracket this year and try grow it out in the future,” Hill said. “We wanted to do it this format instead of putting games together, trying to make everyone happy, We are just going to go out and play and let the chips fall where they may.”
