West Monroe is down one assistant coach for boys basketball beginning this week as Lonnie Cooper was named head coach at Franklin Parish High School in Winnsboro.
Cooper was in his second stint on the staff of Kyle Hill at WMHS when he got the chance to be a head coach of the Class 4A Patriots.
Cooper played at La. Tech and then 13 years in the European professional league. Cooper had a stint as assistant coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe under his college coach Keith Richard before returning this season to West Monroe.
“Lonnie played the game at different levels and was a good player at so many levels, 13 years,” Hill said. “The best part about Lonnie was, he was a role model of the kind of man you should grow up to be. That is what we will miss the most about him was the model for our kids that he was. We wish him the best.”
