West Monroe running back Cam Wright rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Garrett Kahmann added 103 yards and a score to lead the Rebels (No. 2 in 5A) past Neville (No. 7 4A) 29-14.
Neville pulled within 22-14 on a 4th down touchdown pass before the Rebels marched down the field to put the game out of reach in the final two minutes.
Kahmann rushed for 34 yards to set up a short touchdown run that separated the teams.
“We came out a little more resolve in the second half,” West Monroe coach Jerry Arledge said. “It is very discouraging when you have a chance for an interception or you drop a pass. But that is part of the game. But we fond a way to win the game.
West Monroe jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead on a pass from Kahmann to tight end Rylan Green and 58-yard run by Wright.
Neville got within 13-7 at the half with a touchdown just six seconds remaining be for halftime.
The West Monroe defense had a dominant night, holding Neville to minus-29 yards rushing on 28 carries.
“We are a senior group (on defense),” Arledge said. “And the kids have worked very hard, they are very coachable and they play hard.”
The Rebel defensive line wrecked havoc and made life tough for the Tigers on Friday.
“Our game plan was to stop the run,” Defensive end Andrew Gleason said. “We put pressure on them (passing).”
West Monroe (5-0) will visit Ruston (3-2) to begin District 2-5A play next Friday at 7 p.m.
