Rebels cast out frustrations, host Sports City Tourney
West Monroe coach Wade Simoneaux called his team around a large fire pit after practice recently.
The demons and the frustrations of a tough tournament in Baton Rouge where the Rebels lost four straight had dampened spirits. Simoneaux told his team to cast out those frustrations.
One by one, coaches and players through something into the fire, wrist bands, the lineup card from a lopsided weekend loss were among the heated items.
“Whatever it was, get rid of it,” Simoneaux recalled. “What could go wrong (last week), did go wrong. We have to find out what guys can help us on the mound. Get everybody on the same page.”
West Monroe will have a chance to do just that in its home tournament – the 2018 Sports City Classic – beginning Thursday as the Rebels host St. Louis Catholic at 6 p.m.
West Monroe and Ouachita will host games during the tournament. St. Louis Catholic, Captain Shreve, Ouachita, Ouachita Christian, Ruston, Neville, Haughton and Benton are among the teams expected to compete.
West Monroe has struggled due in large part to a strong senior class being mixed with a lot of talent playing varsity baseball for the first time.
“After our seniors, the experience really drops off after that,” Simoneaux said. “After we get to pitchers 3 and 4, we are walking and hitting too many people. These young guys will have to pitch for us in the future a lot so it is important to get them experience.”
West Monroe will also play Haughton at 6 p.m. Friday as well as a double-header Saturday against Benton (4:30 p.m.) and Neville (7 p.m.)
Admission will be $7 per day on Thursday and Friday with a $10 admission on Saturday.
The Peach 99.3 FM and Red Peach Sports App will carry the games.
