Latest Rebel sports news for basketball, baseball and softball
There was a huge day of Rebel athletic news on Monday,
to start with the Rebel boys basketball team earned the No. 18-seed in the Class 5A playoffs. West Monroe is on the road for the first round at No. 15 Hahnville at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Rebels finished third in District 2-5A and won three of their final four games going into the playoffs.
LADY REBEL SOFTBALL SPLITS PAIR OF GAMES
In softball action, the West Monroe Lady Rebels played a pair of games at LA Tech University in Ruston. West Monroe beat Haughton 7-2 before losing to Airline 11-2.
REBEL BASEBALL FALLS TO OCS
In baseball action West Monroe dropped a 6-2 season-opener to Ouachita Christian at Shelby Aulds Field in West Monroe.
A year after losing just three games and reaching the Class 5A title game, the expectations were high and maybe a bit much for a team having to replace so many key components including now pro outfielder and former player of the year Jacob Pearson, centerfielder Slade Bolden and district leading pitcher Robert Scott Foust.
West Monroe looked every bit the part of a young squad trying to find its way Monday.
Marc Newman scored on a throwing error from home to left field that gave the Rebels its first run in the bottom of the third inning to cut into a 3-0 OCS lead.
Gavin Shepherd and Bailey Burtram later scored for the Eagles and Bryce Wallace hit a RBI double to build a 6-1 OCS lead.
West Monroe then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh in a last effort to rally.
A hit by pitch by Carson Jones plated a run but the Rebels (0-1) could not push anymore runs across.
“I told our guys it isn’t how you start but how you finish,” West Monroe coach Wade Simoneaux said. “I like our guys, believe it or not. These guys just need to get some games under their belt. Last year we were able to have a lineup, we could run off on a copy machine. that lineup every day. This year, we have to mix and match and do things we can do.”
