The West Monroe Lady Rebels got off to the right start at the 2017 Sidney Smith Invitational beating Mandeville 68-54 on Wednesday. Journey Tyson scored a team-best 25 points and made four three-pointers to pace the Lady Rebels.
The teams were tied 13-13 in the first quarter when West Monroe went on a big run to pull ahead by as many as 26 points over the Lady Skippers.
Hot shooting got Mandeville back within eight points in the fourth quarter but the Lady Rebels forced some turnovers and made free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.
“They changed defense on us,” West Monroe coach John Green said. “They gave us some outside shots and by the third quarter, we didn’t hit as many. So, there you go. They got back in it and we made a defensive adjustment and just held on.”
West Monroe will host three more days of holiday hoops action. The boys tournament begins with the girls on Thursday.
West Monroe boys will host Mansfield at 6:20 p.m. Thursday.
The Lady Rebels are back in action at home Thursday at 2:20 p.m. against Evangel Christian.
