The The West Monroe boys and girls basketball teams picked up victories Thursday at the 2017 Sidney Smith Invitational basketball tournament in West Monroe.
The Lady Rebels defeated Evangel Christian 60-46 Thursday. The teams were trading blows throughout much of the first half when West Monroe guard Layden Farrah got the hot and led the team to a 32-26 halftime advantage. Farrah made eight of her 10 points in the second quarter. Faith Robinson led West Monroe with 21 points overall while Journee Tyson added 17 points.
West Monroe Lady Rebels host Iota at 11:40 a.m. Friday in the 2017 Sidney Smith Invitational.
The West Monroe boys beat Mansfield 60-43 on Thursday. West Monroe set the tone early with a 15-0 run to begin in the game.
West Monroe led 40-20 at halftime and used a platoon system much of the night which showcased the team’s incredible depth.
“We talked about getting off to a quick start,” West Monroe coach Kyle Hill said. “The key for us now is we have to find a way to keep playing (at a high level) after we have that quick start.”
West Monroe (8-4) saw 11 different players score points and Chris Tyler joined Langston Powell with 12 points each to pace the Rebels.
The Rebels host Ruston in the second round of the 2017 Sidney Smith Invitational on Friday. Ruston beat Neville 54-53 to advance in the winner bracket.
